In cooperation with the Balearic Association for Corino de Andrade’s Disease (ABEA), the University of the Balearic Islands has carried out a teaching innovation project in one of its group social work subjects on the context of the 17th SDG. The main objective was to raise awareness among future social work professionals about people affected by Corino de Andrade’s disease and their families.
This article strives to analyse the impact that the economic model implemented during each period of Argentina’s history had on shaping the country’s health system. Being able to consider this dimension from the standpoint of social work adds complexity to our approach and enables us to understand what specific consequences are brought about for the population we are working with due to the different health policies a government enacts based on the budget assigned to them. This relates to access to the right to health for which we social workers must fight.
In this paper we seek to address the gender impact that the current health emergency caused by the global Covid-19 pandemic is bringing about. We will also tackle the differences between the countries of the North and the countries of the South in terms of their needs and interests in the face of the disease.

The data obtained in relation to people calling for treatment for cannabis in specialised centres within the European context has increased dramatically in recent years. With the aim of examining this reality in depth, we have carried out an analysis from the perspective of social work expanding on social, personal and contextual components that would make it possible to offer a more insightful reading rather than simply addressing the merely quantitative aspects of the phenomenon.
In 1978, the first social workers joined the mental health field at the Psychiatric Hospital of Salt. Forty years later, these professionals have become a key component in the model of mental healthcare in Girona. This article aims 1) to analyse how social work is introduced into the Mental Health and Addictions Network of Girona (XSMiA) attached to the Healthcare Institute (IAS), 2) to review the development this professional figure has witnessed; and 3) to identify future challenges observed by professionals.
In this article we explore the theoretical connection between studies on care and the proposals offered by the social disability model. The aim is to highlight the scientific knowledge generated by the group of people with functional diversity to incorporate it into the various approaches to care. Our ultimate goal is to forge a model of care that meets the demands of the movement for independent life in terms of functional diversity.
Families in situations of chronicity and dependency on social services constitute just one of the profiles professionals forming basic social care services deal with. The risk of dependence on the part of these families often stems from two aspects: firstly, the gradual delegation of basic functions onto institutional and professional structures; and, secondly, lack of knowledge or difficulties for professionals when it comes to determining the most suitable models and methods for intervention.
In the Western world, new phenomena are developing, such as the aging of the population, which leads to growing concern on the part of social workers who deem this to be a multifactorial problem. The hospitalization of elderly patients in Western countries has become a growing phenomenon in recent years.
This study raises the issue of the relationship between patients’ social circumstances and the time spent admitted to hospital, while also considering the influence that the complexity and the organisation of social hospital intervention may have on this period. The study benefits from a sample of 105 patients admitted, assessed and attended by social workers in the subacute care unit at Centre Fòrum in Barcelona in 2017 (n = 105).
