Brief historical overview

THE TEAMS BEHIND THE NEWSLETTER OF THE ASSOCIATION OF SOCIAL WORKERS OF BARCELONA AND THE REVISTA DE TREBALL SOCIAL (SOCIAL WORK JOURNAL) OF THE OFFICIAL ASSOCIATION OF SOCIAL WORKERS OF CATALONIA

May 1960 heralded the start of the publication of the newsletter of the Association of Social Workers of Barcelona. It subsequently became a journal and has been published uninterruptedly ever since, maintaining the numbering of the periodical publication on social work. [1]

In the first eighteen issues none of the newsletters bears the date of publication or the names of the team behind them, says Glòria Rubiol: “According to verbal information from M. Teresa Infante”. Ms Rubiol, as the vice chair, along with M. Carmen Coll as the chair of the Association, were both responsible for the newsletter. [2]

It wasn’t until late 1964 that it was incumbent on M. Francesca Masgoret as a member of the Board to prepare the newsletter. At the time, she formed a team with M. Rosa Morera and Glòria Rubiol. With the support of the Board chaired by Beneta Llopis a decision was made to transform the newsletter into a publication in a journal format with a set frequency. [3]

In April 1965 the first edition of the journal was released. The number of pages rose to around 50 and the cover was printed bearing issue number 19 because the aim was to stick to the original numbering of the former newsletter. Indeed, the title still remained the same: Newsletter of the Association of Social Workers of Barcelona. Issue 20 was released in July 1965 in keeping with its commitment to be a quarterly publication.

The editorial board of the journal was mentioned for the first time in issue 23 (July to September 1966). In addition to the original team, it had been expanded to incorporate M. Teresa Font and Carme Segarra. The journal continued to follow the same design it had adopted since issue 19 up to issue 29 (January to May 1968) consisting of a cover that switched between the colours purple, brown and green.

In fact, it was the release of issue 29 that marked the new title Social Service Journal (in both Catalan and Spanish), with the cover printed in orange thereafter for a number of years. In 1969 it changed its name to Social Work Journal (in both Catalan and Spanish), which entailed changing the legal deposit number that has remained the same to this day. Likewise, issue 65 included for the first time the anagram RTS as an added reference to its name, and again still does to this day.

In 1969 the name of the director of the journal was first stated due to a mandatory legal requirement. At the start of the political transition, in 1975, RTS was the only professional journal about social work being published in Spain. [4] When the associations of social workers in Catalonia came together to form the Association of Social Workers of Catalonia in 1983, the journal was taken over by the Association. [5]
